Coming from the very depths of East London Pepstar, born Ian Opuko, has a lot to prove, and like some of the more successful MC’s that have proceeded him he seems to have the prowess and lyrical ability to really ‘make it’ in the mainstream. Pepstar’s natural talent has enabled him to show promise in all aspects of music making – he began showing an interest in music at the tender age of 6, when he took keyboard lessons which later earned him a Grade 5 Distinction, he has continued with the same enthusiasm ever since.
He has now opened shows for some of the biggest acts from the US including Rick Ross, Lloyd, Marques Houston and Fabolous, as well as performing at many live shows with the likes off Labrinth, Yasmin, Mz Bratt, Stooshe and Ed Sheeran around and outside of London. After receiving a lot of good feedback he felt inspired to persevere, months on releasing his debut single ‘Out The Dark’ with a video directed by Ben Peters.Pepstar’s popularity is visibly on the rise with over 350,000 YouTube hits, his debut mix-tape ‘Take Off’ has been voted mix-tape of the week by Radio 1xra’s Ace and Vis, almost immediately accumulating 10,000 downloads.
Pepstar collaborated with SBTV to bring you the Beats and Bars series which basically shows Pepstar building a beat from scratch then rhyming over it all in one take. This caught the attention of Tabitha Jackson, Channel 4’s Arts Commissioning Editor who was at the time working on Random Acts a short – form arts strand showcasing new talent. Pepstars random act was aired on Channel 4 1st November 2011.
Coming from East London where many of the UK Underground Kings have hailed from isn’t easy, luckily Pepstar is of such talent he’ll have no problem making himself heard.
Pepstar new mixtape ‘No Fly Zone’ is now available for download and is currently working on an EP.
